Violinist/fiddler and film composer Andrew Finn Magill grew up studying various fiddle styles at his father’s summer music program The Swannanoa Gathering. At age 14, a family friend gave him a cassette tape which would change his life and shape his career: The Hot Club de France (A side) and Charlie Parker (B side).
Magill has toured the U.S., Malawi, France and Brazil, recording and collaborating with Michael Jefrey Stephens, Michael Gamble & The Rhythm Serenaders, Greg Spero, Lorca Hart, Nando Duarte and Rising Appalachia among others. Magill is a Fulbright-mtvU fellow, a North Carolina Arts Council Fellow for jazz composition, and a Ropeadope Records recording artist. He has been featured on MTV, PBS, TED and multiple times on NPR. With a catalog of thirteen albums, Magill has also composed and done voiceover work for hundreds of commercials including clients such as Disney, Heinz, Havaianas, Kia, and Budweiser.
His 2023 album The Polaris Project, features 5x Grammy-winner Justin Stanton of Snarky Puppy, bassist Ethan Jodziewicz, and drummer Justin Watt of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Snarky Puppy’s Zach Brock says Magill displays “effortless virtuosity” and Berklee College’s Matt Glaser calls him “an extraordinary violin virtuoso.” Airto Moreira (Miles Davis, Weather Report) says of Finn’s original Brazilian music: “he can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil. His style is playful and light, yet soulful and passion.”
