Obrębowska Amalia

Special award funded by Krzysztof Penderecki European Music Centre

Improviser, composer, leader of the Amalia Umeda Quartet, member of Hand to Earth. The instruments she uses most often in her music are violin, viola and voice. An observer of how intuition works during the creative process.

Master of Arts from two universities - UMFC in Warsaw, majoring in Jazz and World Music in the class of Mateusz Smoczyński (2017-2023) and majoring in Jazz and Stage Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice in the class of Henryk Gembalski (2014-2019). Graduate of the Karol Szymanowski State Music School Complex in Warsaw (first and second degree, 2011-2013).

Amalia Umeda began playing the violin at the age of 7, but did not feel fully integrated with the instrument until many years later, when she began to consciously and independently chart the path she wants to follow, write her own music and take risks when improvising. She likes to interpret music as a form of meditation. When playing an instrument, she values above all the opportunity to reflect a variety of emotional states.

In April 2022 there was a premiere of Amalia Umeda Quartet’s debut album, Novosvit. Its co-producer is Polish Radio Program 2. The Amalia Umeda Quartet is co-founded by Franciszek Raczkowski (piano), Michał Szeligowski (drums) and Michał Aftyka (double bass). The ensemble was qualified for the Footprints Europe 2021 program, thanks to which they played an international tour to promote the album. It included concerts at Oslo Jazzfestival (Oslo, Norway), Umea Jazzfestival (Umea, Sweden), Cologne Jazzweek / NICA Exchange (Cologne, Germany), at Nasjonal Jazzscene (Oslo, Norway), NOSPR (Katowice, Poland), Periscope (Lyon, France), Bimhuis (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Jazzahead European Showcase (Bremen, Germany).

In 2023, Amalia began working with the Australian band Hand to Earth, which resulted in two joint concerts in the same year - at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Jazztopad at the National Forum of Music in Wrocław, Poland. In June 2024, the band will play a tour of the US and Canada, as part of the Jazztopad Festival New York, Suoni Per Il Popolo, Ottawa Jazz Festival and Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
